दसरा संपला होता, दीपावली जवळ आली होती. त्या दरम्यान एके दिवशी काही तरुण-तरुणींचा NGO छाप कंपू आमच्या महाविद्यालयात शिरला.
त्यांनी विद्यार्थ्यांना काही प्रश्न विचारले; परंतु त्यांच्या एका प्रश्नावर सगळे महाविद्यालयीन विद्यार्थी गप्प बसले. त्यांना काहीही उत्तर सुचेना. अवघ्या कॉलेजमध्ये शांतता पसरली!
त्यांनी विचारलं, “जर का दीपावली हा सण भगवान रामचंद्रांच्या १४ वर्षांच्या वनवासानंतर ते अयोध्येला परतण्याचा उत्सव म्हणून साजरा केला जातो, तर मग दीपावलीच्या दिवशी “लक्ष्मी पूजन” कां केलं जातं ? श्री रामाची पूजा का नाही केली जात?”
या प्रश्नावर कॉलेजमध्ये अचानक शांतता पसरली.. कारण त्या काळामध्ये न कुठला सोशल मीडिया उपलब्ध होता न कुठले स्मार्टफोन्स उपलब्ध होते. कुणालाच या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर माहीत नव्हतं. तेवढ्यात, शांततेचा भंग करत आमच्याच विद्यार्थ्यांमधील एक हात या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर द्यायला वर झाला..
त्याला बोलायला सांगितल्यावर त्या विद्यार्थ्यानं उत्तर दिलं, “दीपावली हा सण दोन युगांशी म्हणजेच “सत्ययुग” आणि “त्रेतायुग” यांच्याशी जोडलेला आहे !”
“सत्ययुगात समुद्र मंथनातून माता लक्ष्मी याच दिवशी प्रकट झाली होती. म्हणून “लक्ष्मी पूजन” केलं जातं.
भगवान श्रीरामसुद्धा त्रेतायुगात याच दिवशी अयोध्येला परतले होते. त्यावेळी अयोध्यावासियांनी लक्षावधी दीप प्रज्वलित करून आपल्या भगवंताचं स्वागत केलं होतं ! म्हणूनच या सणाचं नाव दीपावली असं आहे.
म्हणूनच या पर्वाची दोन नांवे आहेत, “लक्ष्मी पूजन” हे सत्ययुगाशी संबंधित आहे, आणि दुसरं “दीपावली” हे त्रेता युगातील प्रभु श्रीराम आणि दिव्यांची आरास याच्याशी संबंधित आहे.
हे उत्तर मिळाल्यानंतर थोडावेळ पुन्हा सगळीकडे शांतता पसरली, कारण कुणालाच या उत्तराला खोडून काढता येत नव्हतं. अगदी आम्हाला हा प्रश्न विचारणाऱ्या त्या तरुण-तरुणींच्या चमूला देखील यावर काय बोलावं हे कळेना.
आणि मग आम्हा सर्व महाविद्यालयीन विद्यार्थ्यांनी एकदमच टाळ्यांचा कडकडाट केला !
पुढे कित्येक वर्षानंतर समजलं की तो जो तरुण तरुणींचा कंपू आमच्या कॉलेजमध्ये प्रश्न विचारायला आला होता तो, ज्यांना आजच्या आधुनिक शब्दावलीत “लिबरर्ल्स” (वामपंथी) म्हटलं जातं, त्यांनी पाठवलेला होता. ही वामपंथीयांची चमू प्रत्येक कॉलेजात जाऊन कॉलेज तरुणांच्या डोक्यात ही गोष्ट भरवत असे की जर दीपावली ही श्रीरामाशी संबंधित आहे तर मग दीपावलीच्या सणात “लक्ष्मी पूजना”चं औचित्य काय आहे?” एकूणच ही वामपंथी चमू विद्यार्थ्यांचं ब्रेनवॉश करीत होती!
परंतु आमचं उत्तर मिळाल्यानंतर ती चमू गायबच झाली !
एक आणखीन प्रश्न विचारण्यात आला होता आणि आजही विचारण्यात येऊ शकतो. तो म्हणजे लक्ष्मी आणि श्री गणपती यांचं आपसात काय नातं आहे ? आणि दीपावली मध्ये या दोघांचं पूजन का केलं जातं?
याचं खरं उत्तर पुढीलप्रमाणे…
लक्ष्मी जेव्हा सागरमंथनामध्ये सागरातून वर आली आणि तिनं भगवान विष्णूशी विवाह केला तेव्हा ती सृष्टीच्या धनाची आणि ऐश्वर्याची देवी बनली ! तेव्हा माता लक्ष्मीने धन वाटून देण्यासाठी कुबेराला या धनाच्या भांडाराचा व्यवस्थापक म्हणून नेमलं.
कुबेराची वृत्ती कंजूषपणाची होती. तो धन वाटण्यापेक्षा केवळ त्याचं रक्षण तेवढं करू लागला.
इकडे माता लक्ष्मी त्रासून गेली. तिच्या भक्तांना लक्ष्मीचं धन प्राप्त होत नव्हतं. धनाच्या रूपानं त्यांच्यावर लक्ष्मीची कृपा होत नव्हती.
लक्ष्मीनं आपलं गाऱ्हाणं भगवान श्री विष्णूंसमोर मांडलं. भगवान विष्णू लक्ष्मीला म्हणाले, “तू कुबेराच्या जागी रक्षक म्हणून दुसऱ्या कुणाची तरी नेमणूक कर.”
लक्ष्मी म्हणाली, “यक्षराज कुबेर माझा परम भक्त आहे. त्याला वाईट वाटेल.”
तेव्हा भगवान विष्णूंनी लक्ष्मीला सांगितलं तू श्री गणपतीच्या दीर्घ आणि विशाल बुद्धीचा त्यासाठी वापर कर !
मग लक्ष्मीनं श्री गणपतीला सांगितलं की “कुबेर धनभांडारातील धनाच्या रक्षणाचं कार्य करील आणि तू धनाच्या भांडारातलं धन भक्तांना वाटून द्यायचं काम करावंस.!”
श्री गणपती तर महा बुद्धिमान ! तो म्हणाला, “देवी, मी ज्याचं नाव तुला सांगेन त्याच्यावर तू कृपा कर. त्यासाठी तू मला विरोध करायचा नाहीस.”
लक्ष्मीनं गणपतीची ही मागणी मान्य केली.
तेव्हापासून श्री गणेश लोकांच्या भाग्यातील विघ्न / अडचणी यांचं निवारण करण्यासाठी त्यांच्यासाठी धनभांडाराचे दार उघडू लागले. कुबेराकडे केवळ धन-भांडारावर पहारा करण्याचंच काम शिल्लक राहिलं.
गणपतीची उदार बुद्धी बघून, लक्ष्मीनं आपला मानसपुत्र असलेला गणेश याला अशी विनंती केली की ज्या ठिकाणी ती आपला पती श्री विष्णू यांचेसोबत नसेल तेव्हा पुत्रवत असलेला श्री गणेश तिच्या सोबत असेल.
दीपावलीत लक्ष्मीपूजन असतं कार्तिक अमावस्येला. भगवान विष्णू त्या समयी योगनिद्रेत असतात. या दिवसाच्या नंतर अकरा दिवसांनी श्रीविष्णू प्रबोधिनी एकादशीला निद्रेतून जागे होतात.
लक्ष्मीला नेमकं याच काळादरम्यान पृथ्वीभ्रमण करण्यासाठी म्हणजेच शरद पौर्णिमा ते दीपावली या काळात यायचं असतं. आणि या काळात श्रीविष्णू सोबत नसल्यानं ती गणेशाला आपल्या सोबत घेऊन येते. म्हणूनच दीपावलीला लक्ष्मी-गणेश यांची पूजा केली जाते !
